NOTD: Essie Smokin' Hot is Smokin' Hot

Hello Friends,

Before I sign off to go on our honeymoon, I thought I'd update my blog with one of my favourite colours.

Essie's Smokin' Hot is from Essie's 2010 Winter Collection and although I don't jump on the new nail polish release bandwagon quick enough, this colour is definitely an oldie but a goodie.

Essie describes this colour as a stone-cold fox gray that burns hotter than any flame.

Talk about one of the best descriptions ever for a nail polish colour! I am not even going to attempt to top that. I am such a sucker for smokey polish colours and this colour sure does hit the spot.

While honeymoon-ing, I will not be bringing any manicure kits or polishes or polish removers. It is going to be a challenge to have bare nails (and potentially neglected nails!) for 3 and a half weeks while I am away. I did consider getting Shellac nails but the removal process,  growing out phase and wearing the same colour for numerous days has me hesitating. Should I just bite the bullet and get this done?

Take care everyone and I will be back in a few weeks!

Until next time!

White nail polish - Trashy or Classy?

Hello Friends,

I have recently fallen in love with the look of bold, white nails. My nail colour of choice is not based on what outfit I am wearing but to me, white is a staple colour that goes with everything. I have heard how white polish can come across as looking trashy but I think with so many nail polish enthusiasts out there with so many different looks and colours to chose from, the boundary lines to determine what is trashy or not is slowly disappearing.

Quick snap! I had to get myself a bottle of white polish and happened to find Essie Marshmallow which is more of a white jelly colour. I am not a professional at painting, so painting sheer colours or jelly colours require a little bit more concentration! I actually put a base colour on using OPI Alpine Snow thinking that it will help with the sheer-jelly-ness. Instead I ended up putting three coats of Essie Marshmallow on top! It was super tricky to apply and I really buggered up the pinky finger. The jelly style of the polish softens the look - which I love.

White nails reminds me of back in the days at school when we started using 'liquid paper' or 'white out'. Back then it was in a little bottle and I remember making an error (as you do when writing with pen!) and used liquid paper to correct my mistake and due to my clumsiness, I would accidentally paint some liquid paper onto my nails. The painting of the rest of the entire nail was definitely no accident. Ah... the things I did back then at school!

Would you wear white nail polish? Do you think it's trashy or classy?

I am not sure how many posts I am able to squeeze in before our honeymoon to USA and Hawaii. I will be back in May and hopefully I come home with a whole bunch of nail polish to show and tell!

Until next time!

Take it Off... Glitter Nail Polish that is.

Hello Friends,

The last time I tried to remove glitter nail polish it felt like I had lost about twenty minutes of my life that I was never going to get back. I was also starting to think that I had to put a bottle of nail polish remover on the shopping list for the week. To put it simply, glitter polish was a biaaatch to remove.

Surely there is a better way to remove glitter nail polish, right? Right on sister there is!

After doing some research through fellow bloggers, I tried the following technique. It does take a little bit longer than your normal removal time but definitely not as long as twenty minutes.

Please excuse my photos as it was taken at night time and I had to remove my nail polish at the time (Black. Girl-ified.) quick-snap so I can wear a new colour the following day.

First things first, I used the following items:

* Cotton balls (I chose five as I split them in half to get ten for each nail...and also because all my nails had glitter polish - otherwise you wouldn't need so many)
* Nail polish remover
* Small pieces of aluminium foil cut to size to fit around your finger

Step 1: Split the cotton balls into two
Step 2: Lightly soak cotton ball with nail polish remover
Step 3: Place soaked cotton ball onto finger nail with glitter polish

Step 4: Wrap foil over cotton ball and around finger - ensure to wrap securely so that cotton ball stays on the fingernail. Repeat this step until all finger nails look like the below picture (it felt just as weird as it looks but trust me, the results are rewarding!)

Step 5: Wait for polish remover to soak into nail polish (I waited about three minutes then I started getting a tingling sensation. I've read that it needs to stay on for about five minutes).
Step 6: Remove foil and cotton ball
Step 7: Wipe off any excess polish - any residue will be a breeze to remove

This is what one of my finger nails looked like after I removed the foil. The tingling was concerning me but if I had kept the cotton ball on for longer then all of the polish may have been removed but wiping the rest off was a breeze and no extra energy was exerted trying to get rid of stubborn glitter.

So, what's my verdict? This is super simple and as I have a secret obsession for all things shiny and sparkly, I look forward to wearing many, many, MANY more glitter polishes. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the fellow bloggers for this tip. You guys rock!

If there any other tips to remove glitter polish I would love to hear and try it!

Until next time!

Black. Girl-ified.

Hello Friends,

I was in a vampy mood recently and decided to wear a dark polish from a bottle that rarely has a chance to be opened to come out and play. This is just plain black nail polish from Sportsgirl I bought a few years ago.

Black polish is pretty edgy on its own. As usual I wanted MORE so I decided to paint just one coat of OPI Divine Swine over the top and then fell in love with this layered look! I have to admit that I have a very big soft spot for all things sparkly so that played a big part in my falling in love with this look. The first thought that came to mind was 'I think I just girl-ified this!'

I don't often experiment with layering different polishes, let alone mixing polishes to get an ideal colour. However, I think this is the start of a great layering relationship! This is one of the things that excites me about polishes - choices of looks and colours are endless!

What is your favourite layering experiment?

Until next time!

Wife Goes On

Hello Friends,

My 'ESL' (English as a Second Language) was not coming out to play when naming this post. (For those who don't know, I was born in Australia hence I'm quite 'true blue' but I just look Asian ^_^ ).

Wife Goes On is one of the gorgeous colours with interesting names from Essie's Starting Over collection. I have many red polishes in my collection but none of them are bright and bold (and beautiful) like this one featured today. It is actually hard to find the right red out of the smorgasbord of choices we have!

Apologies for the slightly dull picture but it has been really hard to capture the true colours of polishes lately due to the constant rain we are getting in what is meant to be 'sunny Queensland'.

The nails were stamped using Konad Special White Polish with an image from plate m60.

There is just something about thin lines on image plates that I can never seem to master! Practice makes perfect right? I'll definitely try this plaid pattern again. There is a bit of wearing off at the tips where the image was stamped which is the result of a day of doing my usual chores - which isn't too bad considering I am very rough with my hands but the polish didn't chip!

My husband actually liked this look as he said it reminds him of the linen paper design that we used for our wedding invitations.

Hmm.. ironic... speaking of wedding invitations in the same post that features a nail polish from a 'Starting Over' range!

Until next time!

Introducing one of the GREATEST INVENTIONS EVER! The LadyBug Nail Polish Holder

Hello Friends,

I am extremely excited about today's post. As I was looking through fellow nail polish bloggers posts, I came across a blogger who did a review on this product and I said to myself 'I gotta get me one of these!' and 'Why have I never seen something so practical yet so cute before?'. It felt like Christmas had come early when I received my latest purchase.

BLOG CAUTION: This post is picture and word heavy!

Speaking for myself, I view painting my nails as a great way to end a busy day and find it quite therapeutic! With all things, sometimes there are factors that could make things a little more simpler. For example, while painting, I hold the nail polish in between my knees. Sometimes I have to find that 'sweet spot' where the bottle won't slip through (I don't think saying 'I wanted a new look for our couch' when polish spills would end greatly). From this, I have many nail polish marks on robes and pyjamas because of how I sit while painting.  Sometimes I also wish for a never ending bottle of my favourite bottle of polish or quick dry top coat. When half the polish has been used, I already have to start tilting the bottle most times. Holding a bottle at an angle is even trickier just to get the last bits of polish!

This is where the LadyBug Nail Polish Holder comes in. The holder claims to eliminate annoying and destructive nail polish spills, can be tipped at an angle when polish runs low, holds many bottle sizes and shapes, designed to withstand a fall, and it may rock and wobble but it won't tip over.

Here are some images of the holder still in it's packaging:

Here are some images of the product out of the packing:

It looks rather chunky in pictures but it is actually quite compact being approximately 10.5cm in diameter and 5cm in height.

I put this beauty to the test and this is the range of bottles that I used:

From left to right we have: Essie, Rimmel (normal size), OPI Quick Dry drops, Rimmel (mini size), Chanel, Sinful Colors, Sally Hansen, China Glaze, Revlon, Shu Uemura, Savvy, Rokk96, Sally Hansen Insta-Dry, Sportsgirl, Maybelline, OPI and China Glaze Matte Magic.

Here they are in action:

A closer look of the item in action. The holder can be placed upright for a full bottle and can be tilted when running low or even when full.

Bottles such as OPI and China Glaze were a very snug fit. So, did they all fit? Unfortunately, no. There was only one bottle that didn't fit and that was Maybelline when placed on the longer diagonal section of the foam. Based on the size of the bottle I am guessing that Deborah Lippman bottles may also not fit. If anyone has any tips and tricks or has managed to get these bottles to fit - let me know! It could simply be me being a little too gentle with it.

Did someone say 'it will rock and wobble but won't tip over?' And 'designed to withstand a fall?' Of course I tried these too and these claims are not lies at all. I dropped the holder at a certain height and there were no dents in it - as good as new! When I used the holder for the first time, I accidentally knocked the holder (polish on nails were ok, phew!) but it didn't spin or spill, it just wobbled. If it could talk it might have even said 'What else you got? Try me!'. Of course I tried to push the boundaries. I had an opened bottle of polish inserted and knocked it at the same level of strength as I think I may knock it while painting and it did not tip or spill. Of course, if you do knock it pretty roughly, there may be some cleaning up to do but really, you wouldn't do that while painting your nails.

What's the verdict?

Pros:
* Flexible foam holds various bottle sizes and shapes
*Three anti-slip plastic circles ensures that the holder is sturdy even when tilted
* Paint your nails anywhere e.g. out by the pool while catching some 'rays, out on the back deck
* You can now get more out of your bottle when polish is running low
* Open the bottle easily even when inserted into the foam
* Easy to store away so it will not interfere too much on nail polish storage space
* Does not tip
* Spill proof
* Light-weight and sturdy design

Cons:
* Could not get larger bottles such as Maybelline (and maybe Deborah Lippman) to fit

Where can you get neat invention? This item is available from my eBay store here. *

Friends, what do you think about this new and exciting product? I am so excited to own this item. I am now certain that I will no longer get nail polish on my clothes or other parts of furniture AND get more polish from my favourite colours! I am very impressed with this product.

Until next time! Get one!

* Product was purchased by myself for review. Items are for sale through my store as I simply like to share Maisky's Favourite Things!

A little bit dotty!

Hello Friends,

My other half had his 30th birthday over the weekend so after days of loads of eating (as you do), I am finally sitting down to catch up on quite a few things that need a little bit of attention.

As I get a little distracted I find myself updating this blog with another nail look.

Today's nail look is deemed appropriate considering the base colour is from Sally Hansen called Celeb City where it reminds me of foil. And oh my there has been plenty of foil lately! My hubby received a new barbecue as a present and has fallen in love with the gift and there has been many barbecues since!

I stamped the nails with pastel blue using Rokk96 Pastelle and Konad m60.

Not that I need reminding that we are all getting older but for my 30th I am planning to go either shooting (at a range) or quad biking. I hear Las Vegas has awesome shooting ranges - will be there in a little over a month! Wahoo!

Until next time!
